    “Smile 2” lands as unsettling grins are plastered on pumpkins and politicians alike as we approach
    Halloween and Election Day, and the psychotic, overly made-up leads of “Joker: Folie à Deux” have been putting up a brave face at their terrible box-office numbers.

    So it’s the perfect time for a sequel to 2020’s
    “Smile,” which bridged the gap between elevated art horror and
    straight-out, unapologetic slasher. Finn this time takes on fame, a better tonal fit than the generational trauma of the first.
    It’s a meditation on breakdowns in the public eye, with a side dish
    of body horror.

    We start six days after the last movie but they are
    barely connected – a single character for a few minutes – as we
    watch a demon that forces its victims to smile before meeting a gruesome end working its way into the low-level drug game.

    The evil entity will eventually glom onto our heroine, Skye, a fictional Grammy-winning pop superstar akin to if Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus had a baby.
    We meet her a year after a horrific car crash she was in that
    killed her famous boyfriend and left her with a Vicodin addiction and rumors
    about whether she had anything to do with it. That drug dealer has now infected Skye, but she has
    no idea what’s in store (or in score, the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).

    On thing to really beam about is leading lady Naomi Scott going for it all-out,
    all snot, smeared blood and wide-eyed, full on-fear. Scott manages to pour her humanity into the
    part – diva, whimpering, defiant, strung out, panicked.
    She even sings on the soundtrack – songs that are credible hits.

    The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about to launch
    a comeback tour and the pressure is on. Finn is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew Barrymore cameo,
    a nice touch – full of self-work and apologies: “I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.”
    Her management demands that she show up “smile and read from the teleprompter.” Skye’s
    mom – on the payroll – is little help: “You need to stay hydrated,” she
    tells her after Skye is clearly in torment.

    Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses
    humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying
    pumpkin Frappuccinos to our heroine Googling “Does vomit have DNA?” He’s still
    fond of jump-scares and blood spurting and gross-out tricks,
    like a body dragged by a truck until it’s just a smear with entrails.

    One delightful moment has Skye chased by demonic backup dancers, a Bob Fosse-meets-“Thriller” sequence.

    Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into cringe-worthy situations.
    In the first movie, a murdered cat got bundled into a kid´s birthday present.
    In this one, it’s a impromptu speech in front of music industry
    types that goes horrifically off the rails. He’s got a deeper target: How do
    we quiet those voices in our heads that say we’re no good?

    Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending
    for “Smile 2,” seemingly in two minds, before basically delivering
    both, kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like a squid pumping out ink to cover its
    tracks. Over two hours ends up being too long.

    But he has found a great satirical target, given life to a third film easily and showcased another rising star to
    watch. That’s a reason to, well, smile about.

    “Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters on Friday,
    is rated R for “strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.” Running time:

    GENEVA, July 27 (Reuters) – The tobacco industry’s sleek marketing is
    attracting youngsters to e-cigarettes which can lead to tobacco addiction, despite claims by some executives that they
    aim to solve the smoking epidemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

    Over eight million people die annually from tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke, making the habit a leading cause of preventable diseases, the WHO said in a
    report calling for greater regulation of smoke-free devices containing nicotine.

    In a weekend interview with Britain’s Mail on Sunday newspaper,
    Philip Morris International CEO Jacek Olczak was quoted as saying he wanted the tobacco group to be able “to leave smoking behind”.

    Asked about such claims, Ruediger Krech, director of the WHO’s
    department of health promotion, told a briefing on Tuesday:
    “I don’t believe … that all of a sudden you turn from being the real problem to being part of the solution.”

    “While the evidence is not yet totally conclusive on the issue of e-cigarettes, we know that they are also harmful.”

    Some 16,000 flavours are on the market for e-cigarettes, including bubble gum,
    vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookies, Krech said, adding e-cigarette users were “at least twice if not three times” more likely to become cigarette smokers.

    “That calls for exactly the same regulation as cigarettes,” he
    added.

    Tobacco firms promote e-cigarettes through sleek product design, social media influencers and flavours, said Kelly Henning of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which funded the report.

    “We know e-cigarettes are extremely appealing to children and the industry’s goal is to get a whole new generation of users addicted to these products,” she said.

    “One in 5 high school kids are using currently e-cigarettes, that’s 3.6 million kids,” she added, referring to adolescents in the United States.
    “There is still a very large problem here.”

    Philip Morris sells IQOS, a device that heats up but does
    not burn packages of ground-up tobacco, to create a nicotine-filled aerosol similar to that
    produced by e-cigarettes, which heat flavored nicotine liquid.
    The company also started selling more traditional e-cigarettes in a few markets
    last year.

    British American Tobacco sells e-cigarettes under the
    Vuse brand, while Imperial Brands markets Blu e-cigarettes.

    “but that’s very small.”

    He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the
    country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

    “People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

    “My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

    So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let
    local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers
    normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.

    “I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

    – Mixed impact –

    The major political parties see the competing referendums as
    offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at
    the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

    But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for
    the White House that activists hope.

    Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.

    Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong
    support and both appear likely to pass.

    So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

    Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring
    Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

    Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
    Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’
    concerns about “government interference,” she added.

    The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh,
    a Republican and an Arizona state senator.

    The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent
    toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

    The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

    Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling
    that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the

    Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers
    & their families’ in a Facebook post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

    purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

    Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such
    as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not

    Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne to Canberra seated next to Senator Jacqui Lambie.

    Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the same flight but were with the masses in economy class.

    It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to frequently fly business despite
    his party’s core policy of cutting C02 emissions. 

    Flying business class emits about three times as much carbon as economy
    class because the seats take up more room and more
    of them are empty, according to a World Bank study. 

    Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses to travel business class. 

    Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led
    to controversy.

    Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after it was revealed he frequently opts for business
    class and has even taken private jets to election events

    Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign, landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill. 

    One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7
    but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane
    to Canberra route to attend his party’s election campaign launch.

    Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being asked
    if he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus one’
    Chairman’s Club members.

    He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including
    an international one he is alleged to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
    Aston.

    The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they
    aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

    With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per
    cent swing to the ALP.

    However, they remain behind South Brisbane,
    which has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted. 

    WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

    March 6 (Reuters) – Altria Group Inc said on Monday it would buy startup NJOY Holdings Inc for about $2.75 billion in cash, in a fresh bet by the Marlboro maker on the
    e-cigarette market after losing billions through its investment in Juul.

    Big tobacco firms are investing heavily in traditional cigarette alternatives as smoking rates decline globally, but the e-cigarette category has faced tough regulatory scrutiny over under-age usage and health concerns.

    Altria is betting that NJOY will prove to be an easier way to tap the market since six
    of the company’s products have received full approval from the U.S.

    Food and Drug Administration.

    In comparison, Juul is still seeking approval of its products and is under the threat that the health regulator could pull its products off
    shelves nationwide as it briefly did last year.

    “(NJOY) is an authorized product versus a pending product (from Juul). There are no litigation challenges. The youth usage is at minimum and so that brings a level of certainty,” said Altria Chief Executive
    Officer Billy Gifford.

    Still, NJOY’s U.S. market share lags well behind
    that of Juul.

    “If Altria wants to make NJOY successful enough so that its e-cig market share becomes somewhat respectable… we believe it will have to spend very aggressively,”
    Barclays analysts said.

    Altria on Friday exchanged its investment in Juul, last valued at
    $250 million, for some of the vaping company’s heated tobacco intellectual property.

    “We are no longer limited by the terms of those agreements to pursue other strategic opportunities and partnerships,” Juul
    said.

    Altria’s stake in Juul, valued at $12.8 billion in 2018, had raised antitrust concerns and the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint in April 2020.
    But an administrative law judge dismissed the complaint
    in February 2022.

    To help fund the deal, Altria said it would use cash from a $2.7 billion agreement
    it entered with Philip Morris International last year
    for its IQOS heated tobacco products.

    The NJOY deal will include an additional $500 million in cash payments based on regulatory approvals of the company’s

    is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place
    hear themselves?

    In the past few days they have mounted self-serving
    arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.

    The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently
    spend.

    The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first
    place.

    So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their
    cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which
    they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

    The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

    At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get
    made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after
    elections are won and lost.

    In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

    Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’
    with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’ 

    Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a
    rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening
    is a major-party stitch-up’

    Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
    as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will
    need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will be capped.

    Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the
    proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and
    ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

    They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s
    proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

    I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this
    column.

    Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important
    transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a
    united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

    More fool me.

    The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward
    by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

    It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
    Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

    Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors
    such as Clive Palmer

    Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes
    à Court

    The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their
    irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

    The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
    Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

    And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
    contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

    Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
    a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
    of political donations.

    The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the
    way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

    They are aiming for implementation by 2026,
    giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand
    the changes before preparing for them.

    Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I
    imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

    As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed
    design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the
    years to come.

    But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer
    their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

    They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the
    package.

    To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to
    ‘clean things up’.

    TOKYO, Oct 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International Inc released cheaper
    versions of its IQOS “heat not burn” products in Japan on Tuesday as it tries to revive sales and ward off competition from other alternatives to conventional cigarettes.

    As regular e-cigarettes with nicotine-laced liquid are effectively banned in Japan, the
    country has become the main market for “heat not burn” (HNB) products, which emit less smoke and smell less than conventional cigarettes.

    Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, was first to start selling HNB products in Japan in 2014.
    But after an initial surge in sales last year, it has run into competition from
    British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco Inc , and its market
    share has stopped growing in recent quarters.

    The companies slashed prices of their heating devices earlier this year,
    as competition intensified.

    “Clearly IQOS sales have slowed down” since their launch in Japan,
    Philip Morris CEO Andre Calantzopoulos told reporters on Tuesday.

    But he said the increased competition was not necessarily
    a bad thing in the long run if the increased choice made the products more popular among
    consumers.

    A new “HEETS” line priced at 470 yen ($4.18) a pack would be available from
    Tuesday, he said. That is cheaper than Philip Morris’s current HeatSticks, tobacco rolls used with IQOS devices, which
    are priced at 500 yen per pack.

    “Clearly, for some people, spending 30 yen more, 40 yen more per day is expensive,” Calantzopoulos told Reuters in a
    separate interview.

    In mid-November, the company will also release newer versions
    of its “IQOS 3” and “IQOS 3 MULTI” devices. The existing versions will still be available at current prices.

    Philip Morris, the world’s largest publicly traded tobacco company, has seen weaker-than-expected growth in IQOS recently, after building a leading position in the global HNB market.

    Japan accounts for about 85 percent of the $6.3 billion HNB market, according
    to Euromonitor.

    Philip Morris says IQOS has a 15.5 percent share in Japan’s
    overall tobacco market, including conventional cigarettes,
    but market share has stabilised.

    “I think it’s natural in any category that you have slowdowns,” Calantzopoulos said.
    “We have people who adopted earlier and people who are more conservative.”

    Philip Morris has also made a marketing application to the FDA for IQOS, which would allow the company to sell it with a
    claim of reduced risk.

    Philip Morris was spun off from Altria Group Inc nearly a decade ago, and Altria will commercialise IQOS in the United States.

    Calantzopoulos said permission for commercialisation would come hopefully before the end of
    the year and Altria was “ready to launch”.

    The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.

    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the second half of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year,
    with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations for volume
    growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year, down from between 14%
    and 16% expected earlier.

    However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit forecasts,
    betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as
